Quite rightly the safety and effectiveness of ingredients in food, medicines are cosmetics are continually challenged and questioned. However some of the discussions can confuse rather than answer just how we can make the best choices.
Currently there is discussion over sodium laurel sulphate, parabens and preservatives in general. The jury is out and many cosmetics houses, some with an ethical name, are saying that until proven otherwise they will continue to use them. However, let’s be clear about what is happening.
Sodium Laurel Sulphate: said to be ‘aggressively’ drying to the skin - yet still included in baby bath products. We do not use this in our products.
Parabens: there are three in this range of preservatives. The one which is causing concern in butyl parabens. Although nothing untoward has been shown about this preservative which has
been used for many years and no shadow hangs
over the other two, we are happily embracing the
movement to ban all parabens.
Preservatives: they say you shouldn’t put anything on your face that you can’t eat.
Whether that is true in general or not, it is certainly true of our preservatives. Let’s be clear that without them, things you wouldn’t want in your home would grow in your creams in a matter of weeks. Our preservative combination is one that is used in the food industry in Sweden - renowned for gruelling tests for safety and quite right too - and is also to be seen on the jars of people such as Neal’s Yard and Culpeper.
How come there’s a whole lot of chemicals listed on our labels? The answer is, there isn’t. Those off-putting words are the Latin names of our ingredients and we, and all manufacturers - are required by law to put these on our labels. Who would have thought that Butyrospermum Parkii was gorgeous, luscious, moisturising, conditioning Shea Butter?
